🔥 Gas Fireplace Safety

- Make sure your fireplace has a protective barrier screen or glass cover to prevent accidental burns. (Valor Fireplaces)

- Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the fireplace opening. (Valor Fireplaces)

- Ensure proper ventilation and that vents are unobstructed.

- Check for gas leaks, inspect pilot light or ignition systems, and have annual professional inspections. (RCS Fireplaces+1)

- Always follow manufacturer’s instructions. Never tamper with gas controls or burner parts yourself.

- Install carbon monoxide detectors near the fireplace and on each level of your home.

If you smell gas, shut off the supply, ventilate, and call the gas company or a professional immediately.

🌲 Wood Fireplace / Stove Safety

- Have your chimney inspected and swept annually to remove creosote and check for structural damage. (CSIA+2Home+2)

- Use only seasoned hardwood (dry wood) — avoid wet or green wood, as it causes more smoke and creosote buildup. (Home+1)

- Always open the flue before lighting a fire to ensure proper draft. (Home+1)

- Use a metal screen or mesh doors to catch embers and sparks. (U.S. Fire Administration+1)

- Keep combustible materials (rugs, furniture, curtains) at least 3 feet away from the hearth. (U.S. Fire Administration)

- Never leave a fire unattended; fully extinguish before leaving home or going to bed. (U.S. Fire Administration+2CSIA+2)

- Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a lid, and store it 10 feet from your home on a non-combustible surface. (U.S. Fire Administration)
